The airport company today terminated its contract with the security service provider ESA Luftsicherheit GmbH. The contract ends after a notice period on June 30, 2024. The reason is the repeated failure of the security company to pay its employees’ salaries.

The company is not involved in the security checks of regular passengers and their baggage. The safety of airport operations will not be compromised at any time.

ESA is one of two companies that carry out checks on employees and their vehicles, as well as on goods deliveries at the access points to the aviation security area on behalf of the airport company. The security checks on passengers and their baggage are not carried out by ESA, but by other security service providers at BER.

In recent months, ESA Luftsicherheit GmbH began making late salary payments to its employees. The airport company then immediately pointed out its obligations in a dialogue with the service provider and issued early written reminders. Due to the renewed failure to pay the remuneration in full and on time, the airport company can no longer assume that the agreed payments will be provided reliably to either ESA employees or the airport operator. In order to ensure smooth checks on employees and goods at BER in the future, the airport company was forced to terminate the contract. This means that the entire service can probably be awarded to an alternative provider from July 1, 2024. To ensure that a subsequent service provider can assume the services arising from the terminated contract by the end of the regular contract term, a new tender process will begin promptly as part of an truncated procedure.
