Marriott International Fiji Hotels are celebrating Earth Day with a new guest initiative at Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay led by the resort’s sustainability manager, Mereoni Mataika who has become a dedicated resource to generate awareness amongst the associates and guests and facilitate sustainable activities.

Next Monday, April 22 guests will have the chance to partake in tree planting. The resort aiming to plant 100 native trees seedlings sourced from MES and Ministry of Forestry across a series of 10 days. Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay will host this in partnership with the Mamanuca Environment Society (MES), an organisation dedicated to protecting the marine and terrestrial environment in Fiji.

The collaboration between Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay and MES started in September 2022 and since then associates and guests have planted an over 3,100 mangroves, 414 corals, and built 13 fish houses in the pristine Momi Bay.

Alongside this initiative, the resort has initiated a Green Office Campaign encouraging associates to make pro-active steps to make their work place more eco friendly by reducing paper, waste segregation and are encouraged to develop further innovative ideas. The resort will also connect with associate’s children encouraging them to to participate in a poster competition with the theme ‘Why should we protect Fiji’s environment’ to teach the younger generation.

As a wider sustainability initiative, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is the first branded 5-star resort in Fiji to abolish all single use of small plastic bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. These have been replaced with residential amenities in all guests’ rooms resulting in a reduction of 2,048kg of plastic waste per year.

Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort and Sheraton Denarau Villas have a partnered with Pacific Recycling Foundation.To date the resort has recycled 5,101 lbs. of plastics, 9,300 lbs. paper, 11,440 lbs. of cardboard. Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort’s Denarau Gold and Racquet Club Farm is a 5-acre oasis of fresh produce that is supplied to the resort’s restaurants & bars. The resort’s farm produces a total of 176kg per week/528kg per month average of herbs, fruits & vegetables.

Marriott International saw the introduction of Hotel Earth in April 2023, an activation framework grounded in Marriott’s sustainability and social impact platform; Serve 360. Hotel Earth supports the sustainability goals across the global portfolio which targets to reduce environmental impact by 2025 and reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions no later than 2050.

Aligning with these global goals, Marriott International Hotels Fiji’s mission is to reduce environmental footprint by 2025 per property by:

  • 15% reduction in our water intensity
  • 30% reduction in our carbon intensity
  • 45% reduction in our waste to landfill
  • 50% reduction in our food waste
