With Earth Day approaching on April 22nd, I wanted to share with you some of the innovative sustainability initiatives that Crystalbrook Collection hold integral to their day-to-day operations, making them the prime example of positive change in this year’s Earth Day theme, ‘Planet vs Plastic’. Properties across the Collection pride themselves on their genuine commitment to what the Collection dubs ‘Responsible Luxury.’
With searches for “sustainable travel” having increased by 191% from 2020 to 2023, Crystalbrook Collection has evolved to meet the needs of both travellers and the planet. All Crystalbrook Collection properties have a variety of practices in place to protect the environment in their aim to practice zero waste, allowing guests to travel with a lighter footprint when staying at their properties. So, while 48% of travellers believe the hardest part of travelling sustainably is choosing sustainable accommodation, Crystalbrook Collection strives to create sustainable experiences to enhance the guest experienceand alleviate these concerns (Travel Perk, 2023).
Authentic sustainability initiatives across the Collection include:
- Australia’s first hospitality group to achieve completely waste-free bathrooms,
- Operating free of single-use plastics including straws and stirrers,
- 80% of the Collection’s restaurant produce is sourced within a three-hour drive of each hotel,
- Guest room key cards which are made with 100% recycled wood,
- Coat hangers which are made from 100% recycled pressed cardboard,
- Technology including iPads in guest rooms having reduced 90% of the paper found in 5-star hotel rooms,
- Partnerships with TerraCycle enable a zero-waste approach to coffee capsules,
- Crystalbrook Byron maintains its own beehives to source honey for use in its restaurant,
- Crystalbrook Kingsley works closely with the University of Newcastle by providing food waste for sustainability studies
Crystalbrook Collection is truly leading the way in terms of sustainable travel and is certified to do so via EarthCheck, a global travel sustainability accreditor. Importantly, 65% of travellers claim they would feel better about staying in a hotel if it had a sustainable certification and met sustainability requirements (Travel Perk, 2023). For their sustainability efforts, Crystalbrook Vincent in Newcastle, along with all three Crystalbrook Cairns properties (Crystalbrook Riley, Flynn and Bailey) have received silver-level certification from EarthCheck, while Crystalbrook Byron and Crystalbrook Kingsley have received bronze certification.
Properties across the Collection are also labelled with ‘Climate Calories’ – an initiative that provides guests with the information necessary for conscious consumption. ‘Climate Calories’ outline whether ingredients in each dish are locally sourced within a three-hour drive, sustainably grown or caught, culturally considered (using native ingredients and working with indigenous producers), consciously reduce waste by using the whole ingredients and supplied to the restaurant in eco-friendly packaging.
By joining the Crystalbrook Crowd, guests can enjoy an instant 10% off all stays, restaurants and bars when booked directly, and receive special offers and exclusive deals.
