As Australia’s closest neighbour, New Caledonia has solidified its position as one of Australia’s favourite tropical holiday destinations, offering unique cultural experiences and white, sandy beaches. The latest travel data from New Caledonia Tourism reveals a remarkable increase in the number of Australian visitors to the island archipelago, marking a significant boost in the destination’s popularity among Aussie travellers.

In 2023, over 30,719 Australian tourists chose to explore New Caledonia, representing an impressive 18.57% increase from 2019 and smashing New Caledonia’s pre-pandemic figures. Even more noteworthy, this result only represents arrivals from flights out of Sydney and Brisbane, with the national carrier, Aircalin, relaunching its direct Melbourne to Nouméa route in December 2023. Considering the substantial growth in 2023, it is anticipated the addition of the Melbourne route will further contribute to these figures in 2024.

Rebecca Marchal, Account Director for New Caledonia Tourism Australia, expressed her delight at the heightened enthusiasm from the Australian market. “Seeing the surge in Australian arrivals reaffirms our belief that New Caledonia holds a special allure for travellers seeking a tropical escape. With just a short flight from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, New Caledonia offers something for every traveller, whether it’s a quick weekend getaway, a stress-free family vacation, or a longer adventure. It’s no wonder why Aussies are falling in love with the destination.”

When in New Caledonia, Australian travellers can expect a diverse range of experiences, from exploring lush rainforests and sprawling grasslands to relaxing on a beach along the UNESCO World Heritage Lagoon. Outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in activities such as sea kayaking and mountain biking, while cultural explorers can immerse themselves in the vibrant local Kanak traditions. Whether seeking serenity on the Isle of Pines, authentic experiences at the local tribe lands on Lifou, or the dynamic atmosphere of Nouméa, New Caledonia captivates visitors with its unparalleled beauty and warm hospitality.

Conveniently located just 2 hours from Brisbane, 3 hours from Sydney and 3.5 hours from Melbourne, New Caledonia remains easily accessible to Australian travellers a destination to add to your 2024 travel list.
