In a strategic move poised to redefine the landscape of luxury travel, IHG Hotels & Resorts, a global leader in hospitality, and Thailand’s Asset World Corp Public Company Limited (AWC) have announced an ambitious partnership. This agreement heralds the opening of two groundbreaking luxury hotels in the picturesque and culturally rich Chiang Rai region of Thailand.
Slated for a grand opening 2025, the InterContinental Chiang Rai Golden Triangle Resort promises an exclusive getaway, offering 68 lavish one- and two-bedroom pool and plunge pool villas. This development is not just a hotel; it’s a gateway to indulgence, nestled in a region celebrated for its natural beauty and deep historical roots.
The second jewel in this crown of luxury is the transformation of The Imperial Golden Triangle Resort into the Kimpton Chiang Rai Golden Triangle. This extensive renovation will morph the property into a boutique hotel under the esteemed Kimpton brand, comprising 68 suites and a plethora of modern amenities.
Chiang Rai, part of the legendary Golden Triangle, attracts travellers drawn to its rich history, cultural immersion, and breathtaking landscapes. IHG’s foray into this region marks a significant milestone for the company and Thailand’s tourism industry.
Rajit Sukumaran, IHG’s Managing Director for South East Asia and Korea, underscores the significance of this venture. “Following the recent launch of InterContinental Chiang Mai The Mae Ping, these new properties in Chiang Rai represent another significant chapter in our over a decade-long relationship with AWC. This expansion is a testament to our commitment to growing our luxury and lifestyle portfolio in Thailand by 50%.”
Mrs. Wallapa Traisorat, CEO and President of AWC, envisions this partnership transforming Chiang Rai into a premier luxury ecotourism hub. “Chiang Rai’s natural and cultural heritage is unparalleled,” she says. “These hotels will not only elevate the province’s hospitality sector but also champion sustainable tourism, enrich local communities, and showcase the rich Lanna heritage.”
These resorts, mere hours from Mae Fah Luang – Chiang Rai International Airport, are strategically positioned amidst serene mountain ranges and jungles, offering stunning views of the Mekong River and the borders of Laos and Myanmar. Guests will be treated to an array of sustainable and organic culinary experiences and a deep dive into Lanna wellness traditions. Activities like coffee plantation tours, hill tribe visits, scenic dining cruises, and learning traditional crafts like batik are also available.
With 34 hotels across nine brands and 39 more in the pipeline in Thailand, IHG’s growth trajectory is remarkable. The company is on course to double its Thai estate in the next three to five years, a clear indicator of its confidence in and commitment to the region’s booming hospitality sector.
This venture by IHG and AWC is more than just a business expansion; it’s a vibrant testament to the enduring allure of Thai culture and the unyielding potential of its tourism industry. As these luxurious properties rise from the fertile ground of Chiang Rai, they promise to offer experiences that transcend the ordinary, setting a new standard for luxury travel in Thailand and beyond.
