Robert Veel has joined Limelight Arts Travel as a tour leader and Director for their collection of expert-led small group journeys exploring fine art, history, and the performing arts.
He brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in cultural touring having established the programs at the University of Sydney’s Centre of Continuing Education and at Academy Travel, where he was the founding director for 17 years. He has designed and led over one hundred cultural tours and is the co-publisher of Limelight Music, Arts and Culture magazine. He has extensive teaching experience in Venice’s history, art, architecture, and music. He resides in Venice for part of the year and speaks fluent Italian.
He will lead tours during 2023 to Venice, Sicily, Germany, and Austria as well as a series of online lectures.
Limelight Arts Travel offers a series of online lectures throughout the year. Robert’s next lecture is ‘Medieval Sicily: Between Christianity and The Caliphate’ on Thursday 21 February at 6 pm.
Brief description: After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, Sicily once again became a valuable prize for groups competing for control of the island. After a period under Greek-speaking Byzantines, Muslims from North Africa and Arabia ruled for two centuries, leaving a remarkable legacy that continued well into the glittering period of Norman conquest and rule and can still be sensed by visitors today.
