New research* released today reveals that over two-thirds of Aussies (68%) say the first quarter of the year (the months of January, February, March) have them feeling the most uninspired. While almost 20% of the nation admit to feeling uninspired while back at work, and over a third pine for new adventures (35%).

In an effort to cure post-holiday haze, and satisfy wanderlust, a host of leading touring companies (Contiki, Trafalgar, Costsaver, Luxury Gold and Insight Vacations) have collaborated to create an Augmented Reality experience that allows you to use your phone to experience some of the world’s best touring holidays.

The experience offers Aussies 360-degree walk-through views of extraordinary sights and experiences available to tour via each of the touring brands, including breath-taking views of the Canadian Rockies, ancient temples of Cambodia, and the rolling landscapes of Italy.

The report also revealed Italy as the location we want to tour most in the world, with 35% saying it’s the destination of choice for 2023. Now lucky travellers can experience an Italian tour from the comfort of their phone.

The study also revealed that Aussies spend a staggering amount of time in the working day thinking about their next holiday. Of those who long for travel, 85% admit to thinking about travel for up to three hours a day.

Aussie travel expert and Getaway presenter, Jason Dundas, supported the development of the AR build by testing and reviewing the experience.

“It’s no surprise to me that most of us have a case of the start of the year blues and are looking to head abroad ASAP. Aussies are keen explorers, including myself, and I’m ready to get out there and explore new destinations this year. France is at the top of my list!

“While Aussies might be facing a lot of procrastination until their next trip, the Windows to the World portal is really a great way to curb your wanderlust and explore some of the destinations you might want to visit this year, before you go,” said Dundas.

Aussies searching for deeper travel experiences

The launch of The Windows to the World AR platform comes at a time when Aussies say they have a deep longing for travel with purpose, with 40% looking for more authentic/richer, emotive experiences – while a further 58% stating they would go touring for their next holiday.

The research clearly shows that travellers are looking for more ‘on the ground’ connection to the place they’re visiting – experiences that are only available to us through touring.

Aussies flock to tour-led travel

Touring is one of the top travel trends for 2023, and those who named touring as their ‘go to’ for the year ahead stated it’s a great way to visit more unique locations (49%), a great way to travel with a tour guide and get more opportunity to see a new country (42%) and meet new people (35%)

Toni Ambler, Managing Director of Contiki, Trafalgar, Costsaver, Insight Vacations and Luxury Gold, said: “What is so great about touring is that travellers can explore so much more about the country they’re in while they’re on the ground.

“With touring there’s an option for everyone, whether that’s for those on a budget, like Costsaver, or those looking for more of a luxury and personalised experience, like Luxury Gold.

Ambler continued, “While our research shows a lot of Aussies are trying to power through a somewhat uninspiring start to the year, it doesn’t mean they have to leave their travel plans at the door. Our new AR Windows to the World portal is a great way to transport yourself into the world of touring and to get a taste for your next adventure.”
