Malaysia Airlines A350-900Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is delighted to announce its participation in the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), to promote responsible business practices and advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the aviation industry.

MAG is proud to be the first Malaysian aviation company to join the UNGC and is committed to aligning its operations and strategies to the organisation’s Ten Principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment, and anti-corruption.

Through this imitative MAG will benefit significantly from accessing local and global sustainability tools and resources, along with implementation of cultural and talent development programmes. These include the incorporation of the UNGC Academy into MAG’s learning syllabus which will increase awareness and deepen group-wide engagement in its sustainability efforts.

Commenting on the announcement, Captain Izham Ismail, MAG’s Group Chief Executive Officer says, “We’re pleased to join the United Nations Global Compact to strengthen our commitment in adopting sustainable business practices. In doing so, we’re, joining a growing list of more than 20,000 companies in over 160 countries who have committed to the UNGC’s Ten Principles, and which also share our same values and goals for a sustainable future.

“Beyond achieving our net-zero goal, we believe that partnerships and collaborations will be essential in propelling our efforts holistically and delivering a positive impact on the environment, society, and governance, and chart our way forward for long-term success,” he adds.

Faroze Nadar, Executive Director for UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) also comments, “We’re delighted to welcome Malaysia Aviation Group to the United Nations Global Compact. As a sector which plays a critical role in connecting people and driving economic growth, the aviation industry has a unique opportunity to lead the way in sustainable business practices. We look forward to working together to create a more sustainable future for all.”

Since the launch of MAG Sustainability Blueprint in April 2021, the Group has continued to accelerate its sustainability agenda across all sectors, inspiring positive change through various initiatives. In addition to supporting the UN’s Climate Action (Goal 13), these initiatives also target three other important SDGs – namely Gender Equality (Goal 5), Affordable and Clean Energy (Goal 7), and Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12).

In the near term, the Group will focus on four priorities to achieve net-zero from the ground up via measures undertaken across all its operations, including implementing fuel efficiency programmes like Sustainable Aviation Fuel. Other initiatives include the Carbon Accounting project, which tracks the Group’s GHG emissions to help develop a decarbonisation strategy and mitigation plan; its fuel efficiency plan; fleet renewal programme; the installation of solar panels; waste management programme; and utilisation of Electrical Vehicles to reduce ground carbon emission in near future.

The Group is also committed to increasing the number of female employees in technical roles and reducing income inequality in line with its commitment to the International Air Transport Association’s 5by2025 imitative, designed to strengthen and improve female representation within the wider aviation industry. As a responsible business, the Group has also incorporated sustainable practices into its day-to-day operations and collaborated with various stakeholders and partners to address long-term business challenges in the future as part of its ongoing commitment to promoting socioeconomic development underpinned by strong good governance.
