Mooraback cabin in Werrikimbe National Park, near Walcha, has been lovingly refurbished by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and is now throwing its doors open to guests.

Nestled at the head of the Hastings River in New England’s high country in a serene valley, this new accommodation offering allows visitors to experience the beauty of the surrounding World Heritage-listed rainforest in a uniquely immersive way.

With bushwalks, cycling trails, waterfalls, swimming options and plenty of wildlife found right at the cabin’s doorstep, it’s the perfect place to switch off and reconnect with nature.

The cabin, which originally served as a base since 1975 for NPWS staff who were working in the area, sleeps up to 6 people in 2 bedrooms and is wheelchair accessible throughout, making it an ideal getaway with family or friends.

It features a fully equipped kitchen, cosy loungeroom with slow combustion heater, hot running water, a sundeck with a gas BBQ and an outdoor firepit – perfect for nights spent gazing at the crystal-clear starry sky.

From the verandah guests can watch grazing kangaroos and wallabies in the mornings and afternoons, and avid birdwatchers can pack their binoculars for a glimpse of robins, fantails and brown thornbills.

Guests can also go platypus spotting at dawn or dusk along the kid-friendly Platypus Pool walking track and keep an ear out for lyrebirds on the Carabeen walk.

Just a short drive away, the dramatic gorges and pristine swimming holes of the national park await. The cabin is also located near the popular Green Gully track, a multi-day walk that allows bushwalkers to thoroughly explore fern-lined gullies, clear mountain streams, forests and towering rocky outcrops.

The rustic hut has been transformed into beautiful visitor accommodation with the funding of the NSW Government’s Visitor Infrastructure Economic Recovery program.

Rates from $135 per night. Min 3-night stay.

Mooraback cabin is now taking bookings for stays from 16 December 2022.
