Close to 8,000 Oz rock music lovers and intrepid adventurers have flocked to the iconic Mundi Mundi Plains on the edge of Broken Hill for the kick-off of the Mundi Mundi Bash music festival – Outback New South Wales’ biggest ever live music event.

The three-day all-ages, dog-friendly camping festival begins today with headline performances from Aussie music legends Midnight Oil and Missy Higgins.

Midnight Oil’s performance will mark a homecoming of sorts for the band, with the festival being staged on the same plains where the Oils filmed their iconic Beds Are Burning videoclip – as well as being a key filming location for many scenes from the Mad Max movie franchise– including the latest Furiosa instalment featuring Chris Hemsworth.

Other performers on the opening day festival bill include Kyle Lionheart, Ash Grunwald, The Wolfe Brothers, Busby Marou, and Richard Clapton.

Off stage, punters will partake in a range of wild and wacky outback activities – from sand volleyball, sunrise yoga and dunny door painting, through to scenic helicopter rides, camel rides and a Mundi’s Got Talent amateur singing contest.

The festival is expected to deliver a welcome economic boost to Broken Hill and surrounding regions. The Broken Hill City Council reported that the inaugural Mundi Mundi Bash brought $3.5 million into Broken Hill in April 2022 alone, putting the festival well on track to exceed its forecasted visitor expenditure targets of $5.4 million over three years.

Later this week, the festival will stage several world record attempts for The World’s Largest Nutbush dance and the World’s Largest Mad Max dress-up.

Other big names in Aussie music will take the stage over the coming days including Jimmy Barnes, Kasey Chambers, Jon Stevens, Daryl Braithwaite and many more.
