After staying in lockdowns for many months, many working individuals have become part of the larger vacationing-while-on-work wave. This has contributed to a massive surge in travel demand over the last few months. Be it trekking or going on luxurious expeditions, travellers are leaving no stone unturned in ensuring they can make up for the lost time.

Remote working has allowed many professionals to bring their work along with them on a laptop. There is something appealing about carrying one’s work along to a serene location and taking a break without compromising on anything. However, whether workcations are going to continue or are just a temporary fad brimming in the pandemic age is still a looming question.

Factors looming as a threat for workcations

The post-pandemic period has been marked by many resignations taking place, meaning workers are gaining more authority in the labour market. However, this may soon change as employers might now be picky in choosing employees to save their business from slowing down during a recession.
  • Time needed away from work: Workcations provide a brand-new way of conducting work activities remotely and in a location of choice. However, they are still not substitutes for vacations needed to bust work-related stress. Working professionals are often entangled with work calls and scheduled meetings, even during workcations. Thus, working on vacation may not completely solve the purpose of taking a retreat from one’s professional life. Instead, they can meddle in the way of one’s work-life balance.
  • Feeling unproductive: Many individuals who chose to go on a workcation reported that they felt unproductive throughout their trip. Thus, workers may soon realise that the workcation trend will not fully make up for a full-sized vacation, where forgetting about work is an added bonus.
  • Managing inflation: The trend had taken off right after lockdown restrictions were removed. Since then, economic factors have changed drastically, including a massive rise in inflation across economies. Thus, in times of inflation, workers are less likely to spend their pent-up savings and splurge on workcations.

What to expect?

Workcations can be deemed as workers’ way of maintaining work-life balance without compromising on their work obligations. However, the public may soon realise that a flexible work setup may only be efficient for a smaller period. While some employees can manage productivity during workcations, many others are torn between the urge to travel and their work responsibilities.

The factors mentioned above point to a potential collapse of the workcation wave. However, such fads are likely to come up every few years. It can be considered a passing trend, provided companies offer other leisure activities in their workspace. Many companies also engage their employees in fun indoor activities and sports.
