Spread the love

The golden autumn warmth of the enchanting Dordogne region in France can be experienced on a week-long, inn-based amble designed to make walkers feel like locals as they journey through classic French countryside, ripening vines and medieval villages, experiencing a taste of quintessential France.

Europe walk operator, On Foot Holidays, is offering the supported, self-guided walk through the beautiful Dordogne Valley this September and October as the colours start to change and the grapes ripen, or for earlybird bookers, On Foot Holidays is offering Australians and Kiwis the chance to enjoy the adventure in the northern autumn in 2023 but pay only current 2022 walk prices if they book by September 30, 2022.

The baggage-free walk is one of 33 hiking journeys On Foot Holidays offers adventurous travellers across Europe.

The picturesque Dordogne journey in southwest France explores parts of the Dordogne valley and surrounding countryside along less-travelled byways through some of the loveliest scenery in France, with ‘slow travel’ walkers fully immersed in the landscape, enjoying the softer hues of autumn and the famous flavours of French food and wine along the way.

Beginning in the medieval city of Beaulieu sur Dordogne, the comfort-filled, seven-night walk takes travellers through country meadows and picturesque villages as guests stay in traditional inns and hotels along and near the river, experiencing local life and authentic French cuisine. After days of leisurely walking amongst hills and quaint villages, the route heads over the limestone plateau to the striking pilgrimage site of Rocamadour, which clings dramatically to a cliff face. The journey comes to an end alongside the Ouysse River, a tributary of the Dordogne, at a Michelin-starred restaurant to celebrate the end of the walk.

The seven-night walking holiday is graded medium with up to five and a half hours of walking each day (shortening options offered). Including seven nights’ accommodation in family-run hotels and B&Bs, seven breakfasts, four picnic lunches, three evening meals, maps and directions, taxi transfers to nearby railway stations at the start and end of the walk and all luggage transfers between hotels along the way – meaning walkers simply carry a day pack each day – the route costs from £1025 per person, twin-share (approximately A$1800 depending on exchange rates). Solo walkers can enjoy the walk for an extra £505. Shorter six, five and four-night options are also available.

The walk is available in April, May, June, September and October each year, with the autumn months of September and October recommended as the best time. Walkers can select their own departure dates. Australians and Kiwis can do the walk this year or if choosing 2023, pay current 2022 prices if they book by September 30, 2022.
