Though fairly new to the travel sector, revenge travel is a phenomenon that has quickly taken over the world. The concept is one of the many tectonic shifts brought on by the pandemic and has resulted in a rapid resurgence of travel demand.

As restrictions have eased and lockdowns have ended, individuals have started spending their savings on travel. However, just a year back, virus-related concerns forced many tourists to cancel their vacations and delay all travel. This period of prolonged indoor stay has left many longing for a trip where they can finally catch a break from all concerns.

However, travellers across the globe have developed this feeling at almost the same time. This means that travel destinations have become bustling hubs of tourists. Meanwhile, the sharp uptick in travellers has helped revive the hospitality and tourism sector to the extent that tour operators are finding it hard to manage the soaring demand.

What is revenge travel?

The sudden wave of tourism that has emerged in the post-pandemic era is popularly being referred to as “revenge travel”. Essentially, individuals have developed a strong urge to travel as they wish to make up for the time lost to the pandemic.

The revenge travel wave has been so pronounced that many individuals are willing to go the extra mile and are planning elaborate and expensive vacations. Many individuals have also stretched their travel budgets and have carried out extended stays.

What should travellers keep in mind?

Those travelling to popular travel hotspots should ensure certain guidelines are kept in mind.

  • Take the road less travelled: In the present context, this metaphor applies quite literally as it is best to avoid those travel spots that are particularly famous among the masses. Instead, travellers can go to less explored places that can offer them a more fulfilling travel experience.
  • Be cautious of the virus: While the spread of COVID-19 has certainly been slower over the past few months, it does not mean that the pandemic is over. The virus still exists and can potentially be caught if individuals decide to take multiple stops on their trip. Thus, it is best to choose only those destinations that have a lower spread rate.
  • Be mindful of staff shortages: The sharp uptick in travellers has left many tour operators understaffed. Worker absenteeism has also increased in the wake of the pandemic. Strikes have also become common as workers have protested the low wages.
  • Plan your travel in advance: It is best to be prepared well in advance as many individuals would be flocking to known travel spots. Booking accommodation and airline tickets can help secure one’s travel. As demand for goods rises, many individuals would find it hard to make last-minute bookings.
  • Be prepared to splurge: Current times require an unusually high degree of flexibility with one’s budget. Travellers should be prepared to spend more than their planned budget due to factors such as inflation and high travel demand. The Russia-Ukraine war has led to widespread inflation, increasing the costs for many businesses. Thus, consumers should be prepared to receive these higher costs over the course of their travel.
