The number of passengers at Berlin Brandenburg Airport continued to increase last month. In total, 1.93 million passengers used the terminals 1 and 2 of BER Airport in May. The number of passengers increased by 130,000 compared to the previous month of April 2022 with the Easter holidays. Compared to May 2021, the figure has more than sextupled. In the pre-Covid year of 2019, 3.2 million passengers had been registered at the former airports Tegel and Schönefeld. Overall, 6.7 passengers travelled via BER Airport in the first five months of the year.
Last month, 15,700 planes landed at or took off from BER Airport. This is an increase of about 10,000 planes compared to the same period in the previous year and about 10,000 fewer than in May 2019. The capacity utilisation of the planes stood at 80 percent in May 2022. In January 2022, the number stood at just below 60 percent.
In total, 2,400 tons of air cargo were trans-shipped last May, 200 tons more than in May 2021. In the pre-Covid year of 2019, the figure stood at 3,100 tons.
Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The spirit of wanderlust among people is still there, that’s something we are quite happy about. The fact that we have been able to welcome almost seven million passengers at BER Airport so far this year is a reason for us to be optimistic with regards to the further development of passenger traffic, particularly in the summer months. The last few weeks have shown that BER Airport is well-prepared to deal with an increase in workload in terms of flight operations. We continue to work hard with our partners to be able to handle procedures for passengers as smoothly as possible in future, too.”
