The team at Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours is honoured to invite Australians to walk in the footsteps of the Anzacs in 2023, with the launch of its Western Front and Gallipoli Anzac Day tours, as well as a wide range of tours throughout the year.
Historian, founder of Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours, and presenter of the popular BattleWalks podcast, Mat McLachlan, said the return of travel to significant battlefields worldwide has been embraced by Australians. After relaunching in November 2021 following the two-year COVID-19 travel-restriction hiatus, Mat McLachlan Battlefield Tours has led multiple group and private tours to key battlefield destinations including Darwin, the Western Front, Gallipoli, and Kokoda since February this year.
Mat McLachlan said: “The Anzac legend and the values of mateship, sacrifice and courage are perhaps even more important today than ever as we have gained a new understanding of what it means to be faced with a looming threat, lockdowns, and limitations to freedoms. Since the re-opening of travel, we have seen a strong resurgence in battlefield tour enquiries and bookings, and we are truly honoured to be able to lead Australians back to the battlefields to uncover our wartime history and the stories of the soldiers who served.
“For 2023, we have added an Anzac Day in Ypres tour, which provides a unique opportunity to experience an intimate Anzac Day Dawn Service with the people of Flanders at Polygon Wood. This is a shorter itinerary to our 10-day Anzac Day on the Western Front tour, so an excellent alternative option for those with less time or returning travellers seeking to experience Anzac Day in a different part of the battlefields.
“With the World Cup taking place in France in September and October, we have also created a series of 4-Day Western Front Explorer tours to run during this time, to provide the opportunity for Australians visiting France for the football to also spend a few days uncovering our most significant battlefields.”
Tours are small-group, include accommodation in the heart of the battlefields together with exclusive extra visits not offered by any other company and are all led by expert historians – who can assist with researching relatives who fought in World War One on the Western Front or at Gallipoli. Private and custom group tours are also available.
