The designers in residence programme titled Camekân, organised by the Istanbul Design Biennial, supported by the Grant Scheme for Common Cultural Heritage: Preservation and Dialogue between Turkey and the EU–II (CCH-II) grant and realised in partnership with the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG), starts on 31 January.
Camekân will be hosting eight emerging designers, either university students or young graduates from Europe and Turkish cities outside of Istanbul between 31 January and 28 February 2022, in Istanbul. The programme’s main location will be Barın Han, the historical building used as a workshop and bookbinding house for many years by one of Turkey’s leading calligraphy and bookbinding artists, Prof. Emin Barın.
As a result of the evaluation following the open call launched in October 2021, Yılmaz Şahser, Kusay Tatlı, Elif Sarıgüzmen, Hanieh Fatouraee, Jannik Lang, Clemens Lauer, Pia Matthes and Kathrin Rüll have been selected as the eight young designers participating in Camekân.
Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), which is the umbrella institution that organises the Istanbul Design Biennial, will tend to their travels and accommodation and facilitate their research and production processes throughout the residency period, providing them with the necessary contacts, material, space and assistance.
The programme aims to help the young designers foster cross disciplinary and trans-regional collaborations and exchanges, and will simultaneously bring together in Istanbul eight mentors/tutors/experts from Turkey and Europe.
Camekân offers a new learning platform based on mutual discussion and learning, presenting original productions where mentors will come together with young designers and experiment different praxes.
Who are the mentors of the programme?
Jan Boelen (curator working across the fields of design, architecture and contemporary art and Rector of the Karlsruhe University of Art & Design – HfG) and Mevce Çıracı (designer, partner at FIELDS and lecturer at the Bahçeşehir University) have been supervising Camekân and will be among the mentors of the programme. The other six mentors of Camekân, all experts in an array of design fields, who will share their knowledge with the participating young designers, will be Ayşenaz Toker (designer and design educator); Candaş Şişman (artist, co-founder of Nohab and NOS); Meriç Kara (designer and instructor); Mustafa Emin Büyükcoşkun (artist, filmmaker and instructor at HfG); Norina Quinte (concept developer, art manager and art researcher) and the curatorial team of Ornamenta 2024 which consists of Katharina Wahl (designer), Jules van den Langenberg (curator) and Willem Schenk (strategist).
Free open lectures within the scope of the programme:
Camekân will be enriched by eight free public open lectures given by the mentors of the programme. The lectures will unfold either as talks taking place at Barın Han, or sometimes as walks through a particular destination in Istanbul or visits to specific locations in the city.
Reservation is required in order to attend classes. The open lectures will continue throughout February. Please keep following the Istanbul Design Biennial’s e-bulletins and social media accounts in order to learn more about the lectures.
What is included in the programme?
The selected participants will visit the city through guided tours, take inspiration from the local knowledge, crafts, materials (both natural and human-made), sounds, smells and images, will be requested to elaborate a theme/topic out of their explorations, to create a narrative and produce accordingly in the studio allocated for them.
The outcomes, which may focus on a space, a product, a person, sounds or moving images will be presented to the audience through a public exhibition which will take place again at Barın Han, at the end of February 2022. In addition to the exhibition, a digital publication compiled from the notes taken by the participating designers and mentors throughout the programme, the materials they will collect and the texts they will produce, will be shared through the Istanbul Design Biennial’s website from March on.
