The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) celebrated the launch of Vietnam Airlines nonstop service to Ho Chi Minh City, making SFO the first airport to offer regularly-scheduled flights between Vietnam and the United States. Last evening, an event was held at the departure gate of the first departing flight from SFO. Vietnam Airlines plans to operate two flights per week from SFO, using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
“We are so honored to be the first airport in the United States to offer nonstop flights to Vietnam,” said SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “This new service truly makes SFO the premier U.S. gateway airport, and we are proud to offer a world-class experience with seamless access throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. We are grateful to Vietnam Airlines for making San Francisco their first U.S. destination, and we are confident this new service will be a success.”
“Vietnam Airlines was so proud of being the country’s first airline to conduct the charter flight to the U.S. more than a year ago to welcome compatriots back to the homeland,” said Vietnam Airlines President and CEO Le Hong Ha. “Today, we are pleased to announce the success of the inaugural roundtrip commercial direct flight between Vietnam and the U.S., marking a new milestone for Vietnam Airlines and Vietnam’s aviation.”
In 2019, SFO Director Ivar C. Satero visited Vietnam to meet with aviation officials to discuss the launch of regularly-scheduled flights between San Francisco and Vietnam. The launch of Vietnam Airlines’ nonstop flights represents the culmination of those efforts.
