Last week the Federal Minister of Health, Hon Greg Hunt, extended the closure of the Australian borders for international travel until 17 December which also means that the foreign flag cruise lines are also prevented from starting cruising in and from Australia at this stage. Last night some of us engaged in a Zoom meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Hon Dan Tehan and he said that when 80% of the population is vaccinated international travel will open up. The Government is planning on some travel bubbles which will be quarantine free. Once 80% is achieved and with the covid-safe environment, he said that he sees no reason why we shouldn’t be looking and planning for the resumption of international cruising. Vaccinations will be essential for travel and one aspect of a recent survey told us that 57% of Australians surveyed said they wanted to cruise domestically. As Australia has the highest per capita, of cruisers in the world (ahead of USA & UK), we also know that cruise ships visiting our shores contribute almost $5B to our economy. Further, of cruisers, 80% are saying they are returning to cruising as soon as they can.
