Qatar Airways has today marked five years since first launching the Sydney to Doha route. To celebrate the milestone, the airline held a commemorative cake-cutting ceremony at Sydney Airport. Qatar Airways is also thanking Sydney for five years of support with a donation drive for local charities and a 5th anniversary sale.

Qatar Airways first launched in Sydney in March 2016, with a daily service operating a Boeing 777-300ER. It was the third Australian city for Qatar Airways, after Melbourne and Perth, and is now the airline’s most popular destination in the country. Since the commencement of services, Qatar Airways has carried just over 1.6 million passengers on its Sydney flights; supporting the city’s AUD $38Billion tourism industry. Sydney services have flown approximately 64 million kilometres across 5,200 flights – equating to 1,597 times around the Earth.

To mark the five-year milestone, the Qatar Airways’ check-in counters at Sydney Airport were adorned with decorations in the airline’s signature colours. There was a celebratory cake-cutting ceremony with senior executives including Qatar Airways, Vice President Australasia & North Asia, Thomas Scruby and Sydney Airport CEO, Geoff Culbert.

Qatar Airways’ Vice President Australasia & North Asia, Mr. Thomas Scruby, said: “This is an exciting milestone for us as we celebrate five years of taking Sydneysiders around the world, and also bringing more tourists to this incredible city. It’s also an opportunity for us to thank the local food and wine producers whom we have built strong relationships with over the past five years. It’s an especially important time for the travel and aviation industry as we work through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We would not be here today without all our partners in Sydney, and the public who have continued to support us over the years. We’re looking forward to the next five years and beyond.”

Sydney Airport CEO Mr. Geoff Culbert said it was important to acknowledge Qatar Airways’ ongoing commitment to the Australian market. “So much has changed in the five years Qatar Airways has been flying to Sydney – not to mention in the last 12 months. We were pleased to celebrate this important milestone with the team, and to recognise their strong commitment to Australian travellers, and to Sydney.”

To say thank you for the support over the last five years, Qatar Airways is giving back to the community with a donation drive. The airline is supporting six local charities; Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Haymarket Foundation, Parramatta Mission, Liverpool Health Centre and Oakvale Wildlife Park. The organisations will receive hundreds of Business Class blankets, pyjamas and amenity kits donated from Qatar Airways, to help them continue supporting communities and wildlife in need.

Qatar Airways is also celebrating with a 5th anniversary sale from today until 10 March 2021 with special fares departing from Sydney from $1,329* return. The airline has updated its cancellation policy amid COVID-19, for guaranteed flexibility on bookings until 30 April 2021, for travel until 31 December 2021. Over the last 12 months, Qatar Airways has been focused on repatriating travellers affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Since 1 March 2020, Qatar Airways has helped carry over 250,000 Australians and international travellers home, including 92,000 to and from Sydney. During this time, the airline has also carried over 41,000 tonnes of cargo to and from Sydney, providing much-needed support for local exporters and bringing essential supplies into the country.

Qatar Airways recently became the first global airline in the world to achieve the prestigious 5-Star COVID-19 Airline Safety Rating by international air transport rating organisation, Skytrax. This follows HIA’s recent success as the first airport in the Middle East and Asia to be awarded a Skytrax 5-Star COVID-19 Airport Safety Rating. These recognitions provide assurance to passengers across the world that airline health and safety standards are subject to the highest possible standards of professional, independent scrutiny and assessment. The national carrier of the State of Qatar continues to rebuild its network, which currently stands at over 130 destinations. A multiple award-winning airline, Qatar Airways was named ‘World’s Best Airline’ by the 2019 World Airline Awards, managed by Skytrax. It was also named ‘Best Airline in the Middle East’, ‘World’s Best Business Class’, and ‘Best Business Class Seat’, in recognition of its ground-breaking Business Class experience, Qsuite.
