SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium may be closed to the public but that hasn’t stopped the team from creating a haunted house for the aquatic animals this Halloween!
The “Ascarium” is in full swing this week, with carefully carved Jack-O-Lanterns submerged in various displays, intriguing the resident sea creatures.
The team of aquarists and keepers – who are working onsite to care for the creatures during the closure period – took some time out to carve several pumpkins and place them alongside tropical fish, sub-Antarctic penguins, Port Jackson sharks and water dragons. Pinjarra the 750kg saltwater crocodile even got to sink his teeth into a pumpkin for a bit of fun!
“The Port Jackson sharks and water dragons were fascinated by the Jack-O-Lanterns, but the tropical fish were more sceptical. The Halloween festivities are a form of enrichment for the aquatic animals. As part of our care, we provide many of our creatures with enrichment opportunities that allow them to take part in new experiences and discover environmental changes,” said Sam Fawke, Exhibit Manager at SEA LIFE Melbourne.
SEA LIFE Melbourne is preparing to reopen when the Victorian Government moves to the Last Step in the roadmap to recovery. The team is incredibly excited to welcome guests back through the doors and to continue creating truly memorable experiences for visitors!
