Hurtigruten brings 127 years of expedition expertise – and the world’s greenest expedition ships – to the Caribbean and Central and South America, offering adventurous guests new sustainable expedition cruises to the tropics.

Hurtigruten is the world’s leading expedition cruise company. With a strong commitment to sustainability at its core, the trailblazing Norwegian operator is also considered the world’s greenest cruise line.

In 2021, Hurtigruten will offer its largest ever selection of voyages in non-polar waters – presenting a wide range of unique experiences by small custom-build expedition ships.

“Hurtigruten goes where the big ships can’t go, bringing guests closer to the real experiences. We draw on more than a century of expedition know-how when we offer modern explorers to cruise with a conscience in tropical waters,” says Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam.

Big experiences on small ships

The world’s first two hybrid battery powered expedition ships, MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, as well as a fully upgraded MS Fram, are all set to explore the middle and southern parts of The Americas.

Among the highlights of the new expedition cruises include:

The Caribbean            Fascinating marine wildlife, pristine beaches, tropical jungles. Visit Guadeloupe, Martinique, Cuba, ABC islands, Costa Rica and Jamaica.

Central America         Local and Mayan culture, UNESCO sites, national parks including Monteverde and Tortuguero, the Panama Canal, San Jose, and Cartagena. Enjoy ziplining, white water rafting, and surfing.

South America           Sail from warm to cold waters visiting national parks, UNESCO towns, the Amazon River, Chilean Fjords, Buenos Aires, Rio, Chile, Peru, Patagonia, and Cape Horn.

“We will scratch beneath the surface of the stunning scenery, the pristine beaches and the tropical wildlife. Exploring with Hurtigruten means immersing in unique and authentic experiences. Our small-sized expedition ships can visit ports and waters inaccessible for larger ships – bringing guests up-close to exceptional nature, culture and history,” says Skjeldam.

He notes that Hurtigruten will offer guests more than the conventional ports, destinations and activities.

“Hurtigruten’s take on warm waters, is offering sustainable and unique, lifechanging experiences on top of sun and warm weather, and swims and dives. We heighten our off-the-beaten-path expeditions through top-end adventuring programs.”

All Hurtigruten guests explore side-by-side with a sizeable number of hand-picked expedition team members. The pairing deepens and enriches the guest experience through added extensive knowledge in various academic fields – such as marine biology, sustainability, history, oceanography and photography.

“Our teams of experts give lectures on their respective fields and explain and discuss all the interesting events we experience along our epic voyages,” says Skjeldam.

The centrepoint of all knowledge activities are the onboard Hurtigruten Science Centers where guests and experts meet over microscopes and other scientific equipment to learn about the waters and wildlife the ship is sailing through. Guests are also encouraged to participate in citizen science projects.
