The Berlin airport company is involved in over 150 projects in the capital region. With the “Donate your deposit” initiative alone, more than 600,000 euros have been collected since Spring 2017, which benefits exclusively Berliner Tafel. Furthermore, the airport company supports associations, educational institutions, day-care centres and voluntary initiatives with a six-figure sum each year. Most of the projects – more than 100 of them – are located in Brandenburg.

“Donate your deposit” is a cooperation with The Green Dot, the education and employment institution Goldnetz, Berliner Tafel and Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH. Passengers at Tegel and Schönefeld airports can dispose of their empty plastic bottles before the security checks in containers with the inscription “Donate your deposit”. In the past two and a half years, a total of about 2,100,000 bottles with returnable deposits of a value of 25 cents each and another just under 100,000 returnable bottles have been collected and recycled.

Thanks to the common initiative, 30 additional jobs could be created for the long-term unemployed. These so-called “deposit agents” are employed by “Goldnetz”. They empty and clean the “Donate your deposit” barrels and sort the empty bottles. The Green Dot takes care of the logistics, which means that they look after the transport and recycling of the bottles.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: “The high amount of donations is a sign that our passengers can already do something for people in difficult social situations with just a small gesture. In the past year alone, the Berlin airports have welcomed over 35 million passengers. The ‘Donate your deposit’ campaign signifies our airports’ commitment to sustainability. Anyone who flies can also make a small contribution to the environment with this.”

Franziska Giffey, German Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and patroness for the Tafeln food banks in Germany: “As the patroness for the Tafeln food banks in Germany, I am pleased that an amount like this has been raised. I personally know issuing points of the Berliner Tafel and understand how important this support is. A great initiative to support the work of the Berliner Tafel and its many dedicated voluntary helpers.”

Sabine Werth, founder and chairwoman of Berliner Tafel e.V.: “The common initiative is a great support for our work. With the passengers’ deposit donations, we have been able to finance, among others, two transporters and a cold store for our warehouse, which we urgently need for our food.”
