A Qantas A380 flight from Sydney to Dallas/Fort Worth, one of the world’s longest regularly scheduled non-stop commercial flights, was cancelled at the weekend after an accident at Sydney Airport almost totally ripped off the door of the A380 due to operate the sector.

According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, the A380 struck scaffolding while being rolled out of a maintenance hangar at Sydney Airport on Friday.

The paper reported that the incident forced the cancellation of flight QF7 from Sydney to Dallas on Saturday afternoon, as well as the return flight, QF8, that had been due to leave Dallas on Sunday.

The door was said to have been totally ripped from the Qantas A380’s fuselage when the plane struck a hangar support structure.

The report quoted Qantas confirming that an A380 had “sustained some damage inside the hangar”, adding that engineers expected to have the plane back in service in about two weeks.
