Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong welcomes acclaimed chef duo Mathias and Thomas Sühring, from award-winning Sühring restaurant in Bangkok, to take up residency at The Krug Room from 12 to 13 September 2019 and Mandarin Grill + Bar on 14 September 2019. The visiting chefs will showcase their culinary talents elegantly paired with a collection of Krug Champagne, offering a one-of-a-kind gastronomic experience not to be missed by gourmands.
Located in a beautifully restored townhouse in Bangkok, Sühring has become one of the most sought-after restaurants in the region since it opened in March 2016. Inspired by their childhood memories and family recipes, the twin chefs are renowned for their inventive German cuisine that has led the restaurant to place in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list at No. 13 in 2017 and rose to No. 4 for two consecutive years. They also debuted in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list at No. 45 this year, won their first Michelin-star in the inaugural 2018 Bangkok edition and holds two-star status today.
Using only the finest seasonal ingredients, the German natives combine the essence of traditional dishes with contemporary Central European influences. During their residency, guests will experience their culinary philosophy through a 13-course tasting menu divided into three chapters. Chapter one introduces a range of snacks such as Leberkäse, a specialty from the south of Germany served at traditional beer gardens. It consists of ground pork and bacon that has a crunchy brown crust, accompanied by a warm pretzel.
Chapter two features mains including Aal Grün, which is a classic dish from Berlin. The eel is perfectly cooked in a broth and is served with a cucumber salad seasoned with sour cream, parsley and dill. Another dish to highlight is Spätzle, a soft egg noodle that is widely considered a Swabian specialty. The traditional noodle dish offers a soft texture and is topped with black truffle for the ultimate combination of flavour and fragrance.
And finally, chapter three ends with a few sweet treats. One notable dessert to mention is the Omas Eierlikör, a traditional German eggnog made from the twins’ grandmother’s secret recipe.
