New Zealand has challenged misconceptions about its suitability as a destination for business events with a humorous response: You’ve Gotta be Joking!

Tourism New Zealand’s showcase event welcomed 78 Australian PCOs and association executives to Sydney’s Ovolo Woolloomooloo Hotel on 26 June for a talkshow-style takedown of the most common misunderstandings about business events in New Zealand.

With well-known New Zealand comedian Jeremy Corbett as the show’s host, the ‘audience’ were invited to participate in gameshow questions, with two trips to New Zealand up for grabs.

New Zealand was represented by six regional convention bureaus and a number of key event operators, with the novel format debunking preconceived ideas about New Zealand, such as a perceived lack of accessibility and infrastructure.

Tourism New Zealand Global Manager Business Events, Anna Fennessy, said: “Recent research of the Australian business events market showed there were some misconceptions about holding events in New Zealand. The ‘You’ve Gotta be Joking!’ concept allowed us to allay those fears in a fun way, while informing attendees that hosting an event in New Zealand is closer and easier than you think.”
