The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) has launched new posters to be displayed on expedition cruise vessels sailing in the Arctic. The posters will inform guests about AECO’s guidelines for responsible Arctic tourism.

AECO’s members have committed to following AECO’s comprehensive guidelines when operating in the Arctic, covering everything from how to observe wildlife without causing disturbance to advice on how to behave when visiting Northern communities. The guidelines are communicated to passengers through briefings, animations and pre-voyage information. AECO’s most recent tool to raise awareness of responsible behaviour is four posters that highlight some essential AECO guidelines.

Frigg Jørgensen, executive director of AECO, says that the posters will reinforce the message of responsible tourism.

“Our members are already doing an excellent job in educating guests about the dos and don’ts of visiting Arctic sites and communities. By speaking directly to the guests, these posters will contribute to increased awareness around the guidelines and help guests understand the importance of choosing a responsible operator.”

Among other things, the posters give tips on observing wildlife, what to be mindful of when visiting communities as well as information on what AECO is doing to manage responsible tourism. The posters have been developed with the support of Svalbard Environmental Protection Fund.
