The mighty Boeing 747, the much-loved jumbo jet which reigned as Queen of the Skies for decades, has turned up at the bottom of the sea, deliberately sunk to provide entertainment for scuba divers, as below.

In a deliberate 747 sinking, one of the 70-metre-long, four-engined passenger aircraft is going down to the seabed off Bahrain as the prime exhibit of an “ultimate underwater theme park”.

According to the online edition of Scuba Diver magazine, the big aircraft will form the centrepiece of an undersea park 10 hectares in size, about 20 metres below the surface.

The park will also offer divers decommissioned sunken ships, a replica of a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house, sculptures crafted from eco-friendly materials and artificial coral reefs.

Deliberate aircraft sinkings are not just happening in Bahrain. On Saturday, an Airbus A330 was lowered into the sea in northwestern Turkey to boost scuba tourism, Turkey’s Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The A330 passenger plane was scuttled about 1.5km from Ibrice Port in Edirne province at a ceremony attended by local officials. The Gulf of Saros in the northern Aegean Sea is a popular diving spot.

Jordan has carried out similar deliberate aircraft sinkings – with the Jordanian Red Sea port of Aqaba due to gain its second sunken plane in the next month or so, according to Scuba Diver magazine.

Bahrain’s underwater theme park is due to open in a month or two.

It’s located about 30km from the Amwaj Islands and it hopes to attract tourists, marine biologists, environmentalists, university students and researchers.
