Spread the love

Whether you’re looking for a weekend away from the mad city rush or a convenient stop over as part of a larger journey, nestled just 90 minutes from Sydney’s CDB is lovely Lake Macquarie. Home to some of NSW’s best beaches and even better sunsets, to quirky cafes, breweries and everything in between – here’s what you need to see if you only have two days to spend in this hidden gem.

DAY ONE

Morning

Start the day right with a delicious breakfast at Little White Bull Espresso in Warners Bay, loved by locals for its quality coffee and relaxing views of the Lake. After you’ve devoured your Sautéed Secret Garden (we’ll leave that for you to discover – let’s just say YUM!) or waffles with lashings of warm Nutella, berries and ice cream – take a stroll along the esplanade or hire a bike from Boomerang Bikes and enjoy the picturesque Lake views along its shared waterfront pathway.

Next, jump onboard Lake Macquarie Cruises’ ‘Loop the Lake Cruise’ and experience the hidden highlights of beautiful Lake Macquarie – the largest saltwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere. After cruising the eastern side of the Lake and enjoying a Devonshire morning tea, leave the crowds behind as you delve into fabulous scenery and wildlife while circling Pulbah Island. Stop for a hot cooked lunch overlooking the waters of Wangi Bay then re-board the vessel and complete the loop.

Noon

Lace up your walking shoes because the day isn’t over yet! Head to Dora Creek, this tranquil waterway is ideal for family picnics on the riverbank, bushwalks, kayaking or feeding the friendly ducks.

Don’t forget to stop by one of the most talked about locations to get a bite in Lake Mac, Greg and Audreys. The delicious American style food, including their raved-about range of ice creams all made in-house (sundaes served with a mini umbrella!) will have you drooling.

Just around the corner is Toronto Foreshore, where you can snap the ultimate Instagram pic with the 3D floor mural. Part of Lake Macquarie’s Creative LAKE initiative, this immersive 3D experience will make you feel as though you’re fighting off an angry great white while sailing the high seas in a wooden dingy.

Night

Wind down and finish the day with Australian Good Food and Travel Guide award winning, Vita Café and Restaurant. With handmade, mouth-watering pasta dishes, stone baked Italian pizzas and potato gnocchi this is sure to be a favourite with Italian lovers – Bellissimo!

Finish the day with a moonlight stroll around Wangi Bay, one of the most romantic spots in Lake Mac.

DAY TWO

Now you’ve seen the scenic west side of the Lake, its time to explore those beautiful beaches!

Morning

Early risers, this is your time to shine – Redhead Beach’s Cargo Espresso Bar is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunrise with its panoramic views of ocean, red cliffs and the iconic Redhead Beach shark tower. After you’ve watched the sun paint the sky while enjoying your morning coffee and a bite to eat, take a dip, try your hand at fishing or join the local surfers.

Your sightseeing continues at Caves Beach, its extensive network of sea caves and rock pools are ideal for low-tide exploration. Crawl through tight holes, hang out in shady caves or sun yourself on the sandy shore.

If you’re up for more adventure, the Caves Beach Coastal Walk should be next on the agenda. This walking track links Caves Beach with the headland just south of Pinny Beach, giving spectacular views over the coastline and ocean. Be sure to keep a look out for passing Humpback and Southern Right Whales from May through to September.

Noon

Next door, the Caves Coastal Bar & Bungalows is a great place for an icy cold schooner and meal to refuel before an afternoon of fun. The venue’s newly renovated indoor and outdoor space is the perfect setting for a long, lazy seaside lunch.

Before you get too relaxed, jump back in the car and head over to Cams Wharf for an experience on the Lake that’s anything but tranquil. Onboard the JetBuzz jet boat your heart rate will soar as you enjoy full circle spins, power brake stops and fun fish tails – you can even opt for the Ocean Extreme adventure and enjoy additional thrills and spills out in the ocean.

Night

It’s time to kick back and enjoy a beer with the locals, and there’s no better place for that than The Boat Shed Bar + Galley – with 16 craft beers on tap you’re spoilt for choice! There’s a finger-licking-good Burger Bros menu, with each burger carefully paired with a beer to ensure the ultimate taste sensation, as well as live music every Saturday and Sunday night so you can finish your 48 hours dancing the night away.
