The popular KI Food Safari held at Southern Ocean Lodge will have a new format in 2019, a short-take on the original, running over a long weekend and celebrating the culinary talent and friendships of three of South Australia’s most lauded chefs.

The three-night KI Food Safari will run over the dates July 12-15, 2019.

Southern Ocean Lodge Executive Chef Asher Blackford will team up for the event with Duncan Welgemoed of Adelaide’s Africola and Tom Jack, head chef at Mitolo Wines’ Bocca di Lupo in McLaren Vale.

The trio will each host a degustation dinner or long lunch with matched wines from The Islander Estate, Mitolo Wines and The Lane Vineyard, with the final night a combined gala dinner presented by the three chefs. Each will lead cooking masterclasses and produce tastings, both ‘in the field’ and in the kitchen or in the Great Room at Southern Ocean Lodge.

A day’s expedition to Kangaroo Island’s food producers includes a visit to a local marron farm, lunch at the Islander Estate’s Vineyard, wild gin tastings at KI Spirits and a tour of the ground-breaking Aquaculture Skills Centre at Parndana School, where senior students produce sustainable barramundi and herbs.

Back at Southern Ocean Lodge there’ll be a free-range lamb cooking masterclass, shucking and tastings of American River Oysters and a fascinating insight to the island’s Ligurian bees.

Southern Ocean Lodge owner James Baillie said the 2019 KI Food Safari was a celebration of South Australia’s vibrant food scene, the state’s fabulous fresh produce and the growing community of talented chefs, winemakers and producers.

“We are incredibly lucky to be working as part of a community of food visionaries in South Australia, including our own chef Asher Blackford, and to have access to some of the world’s greatest wines and magnificent regional produce,” Mr Baillie said.

“We believe the new, shorter KI Food Safari format will make it easier for guests to get away for a rewarding and fun foodie break,” he said.

The KI Food Safari is priced from $4,150 per person twin share* including three nights at Southern Ocean Lodge, an itinerary of excursions, produce tastings and masterclasses, all dining and beverages, in-suite bar and island airport transfers.
