Day three of the Global Tourism Summit on October 3 will feature a panel session addressing a subject no one ever wants to occur – but everyone needs to prepare for – the planning and real-time handling and ongoing response to a major man-made or natural disaster.

Presented by the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA), the Global Tourism Summit begins next Monday and continues through Wednesday, October 1-3, at the Hawaii Convention Center in Honolulu. The summit theme is Charting the Course.
Crisis Management: Lessons Learned, October 3, 11:15 a.m.
In conjunction with the summit theme, a general session focused on responding to a major disaster, Crisis Management: Lessons Learned, will take place on October 3, starting at 11:15 a.m. The public is invited to participate in the discussion, ask questions of the panelists, and learn from experts who have responded to and rallied from tragedies that had a life-altering impact on people and places. The session panelists are Jeff Hahn of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Kiyoshi Murakami of the City of Rikuzentakata in Japan, and Dr. Peter Tarlow, a world-renowned expert on crime and terrorism to the tourism industry. Moderating the session will be Jennifer Walter, chief of the Preparedness Branch of the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.

These panelists have dealt with the aftermath of major tragedies and will provide valuable advice and recommendations that every destination and organization can utilize for preparation and response.”
Jeff Hahn directs customer safety for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. Twenty-five years of Hahn’s professional experience have supported his calling: being there when bad things happen to good people, most notably the mass shooting of October 1, 2017, that killed 58 people and injured 851 others from gunfire and the resulting panic. For three weeks following this tragic event, the Las Vegas Convention Center was home to the Family Assistance Center. Jeff will share the vital lessons learned and how everyone can prepare to answer the call when faced with the unthinkable.
Kiyoshi Murakami has served as senior executive advisor to the City of Rikuzentakata since the 2011 tsunami disaster in Japan completely wiped out his hometown. Although he had extensive experience at several global financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and Merrill Lynch, Murakami devoted himself to the disaster management and rebuilding of Rikuzentakata by leading numerous programs and projects advocating its situation to the world, which included connecting the city with global corporations and new industries.
Dr. Peter Tarlow has been advising the tourism community on travel safety and security issues since 1990. He has worked with numerous U.S. government agencies, including the FBI, U.S. Park Service, Department of Justice, Center for Disease Control, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Dr. Tarlow has also worked with iconic U.S. locations including New York’s Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building, Philadelphia’s Independence Hall and Liberty Bell, and St. Louis’ arch.
Three Days of Thought-Provoking Sessions at Global Tourism Summit
During the three days of the summit, other thought-provoking sessions, presentations and panel discussions will address the need to strive for sustainable tourism, trends in the global travel marketplace, the significance of culture in marketing tourism, global marketing programs promoting travel to Hawaii in 2019, and new travel innovations being implemented, including artificial intelligence.
Special events at the summit include the Luncheon featuring Talk Story with Sophia the Robot, as well as the Networking Reception on October 1, the Aloha Reception – with cuisine provided by 20 restaurants – on October 2, and the Tourism Legacy Awards Lunch on October 3, all of which are included in the full summit registration, or when registering for those days.
