The Ritz-Carlton Bali fuses island inspiration with cutting edge style to create the ultimate beach resort experience

Completed by award-winning architect and design firm WATG, The Ritz-Carlton, Bali is at the forefront of contemporary tropical design, integrating traditional Balinese architectural elements with elegant modern design concepts to striking effect.

Set over 12.7 hectares on Bali’s south east coast, the acclaimed luxury beachfront resort sweeps dramatically from a towering limestone cliff down to the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean. The thoughtful, highly integrated design respects the natural environment and local Balinese culture, while providing a highly memorable tropical resort experience for its guests from around the globe.

The magnificent lobby which perches high on the cliff top makes an exciting introduction to the resort. Grand in design, yet intimate in atmosphere, the steep, tiered roof and local stonework are a firm nod to Balinese style. However, it is the viewing deck which reveals a panoramic vista of the endless blue ocean and the magnificent resort grounds far below that really takes the breath away. At ground level, verdant lawns lead to an experiential fish pond and onto the main swimming pool and white sand beach that meets the translucent waters of the Indian Ocean. Guest wings set in flourishing gardens fans out on either side of the pond.

Well-appointed conference facilities, elegant ball room and generous lawns – ideal for sunset soirees – are also set on the cliff top and offer expansive ocean views. While deluxe cliff top villas provide idyllic luxury havens for guests looking for seclusion and privacy. Hugging the cliff face one floor below the lobby, the signature Indonesian restaurant Bejana, also incorporates a number of evocative design elements, from linear skylight, to cantilevered timber decking and atmospheric culinary cave cooking school.

The views from the top level are not only breathtaking, but represent an impressive architectural feat, with designers turning the stunning 50-meter cliff into the resort’s most dramatic feature, with a glass-cladded elevator transporting guests in an exhilarating ride from the upper levels to the beachfront. “The three-dimensional quality of the land became a design opportunity, explains Roger Gaspar, WATG’s Associate Vice President and Senior Project Designer. The result is a beautiful tropical beachfront resort that thrills the senses with endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

During the rainy season the cliff is lush and verdant – creating an eye-catching vertical garden that has a big role to play in the guests’ overall tropical experience. The base of the cliff makes a dramatic backdrop for the award-winning Ritz-Carlton Spa, a luxurious sanctuary set amidst soothing gardens. Here guests can indulge in customized treatments that blend the raw transformative power of the Indian Ocean, with Bali’s ancient healing traditions. Guests can also attend classes in the yoga room, visit the beauty salon and work out in the well-equipped gymnasium overlooking the gardens. Design highlights of the Spa include a five-station Hydro-Vital Pool and a beautiful Balinese Bathing Pool tucked into the cliffs – a place of quiet contemplation inspired by Balinese Hindu cleansing rituals.

“The resort is spacious, with a total of 313 suites and villas, six stylish dining venues and bars, a sublime Spa, multiple swimming pools, and beachfront Majestic Chapel. Yet our vision for a highly integrative design that harmoniously blends all aspects of the resort with the environment has been brought to life in the most spectacular way,” says General Manager Karim Tayach.

Expansive lawns fringed by tropical plants create glorious outdoor spaces throughout, perfect for the resort’s award winning outdoor events. Guest accommodation arc out from either side of the lower cliff lobby, each angled to best enjoy the ocean view. Spacious Suites and Pavilion Villas are set around tropical lagoons, while roof top Sky Villas are a design tour de force with sensational views, expansive terraces and infinity plunge pools. The main pool occupies the central beach front, just meters from dazzling the Indian Ocean. The Beach Grill restaurant sits alongside the pool, providing guests with an atmospheric semi open air dining experience. In the western corner of the resort, the Majestic Chapel rises from the sand. Stunning glass walls reveal a striking panorama of endless sparkling blue ocean making it an enviable setting for dream wedding scenarios.

A modern-day architectural and design feat, The Ritz-Carlton, Bali provides a sleek, elegant and supremely comfortable setting for its guests while amply reflecting the strong traditions of its island setting. The Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana – which translates as the three tenets of wellbeing: harmony with nature, amongst people and with the Gods – is at its core. Harmonious exteriors blend seamlessly with nature, while interiors provide a soothing and luxurious respite. Wooden accents, hand polished plaster reliefs and inspiring art works are found throughout, while hand woven Balinese fabrics and hand selected artifacts decorate each suites and villas. Combined with indulgent amenities, high tech gadgetry, world class facilities and attentive service, guests are assured the most pleasurable of stays.
