A ski instructor accused of sexually assaulting a woman after knocking her male friend unconscious last week at the ski town of Jindabyne in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains has been formally refused bail.

British national Matthew James Williams, 28, will remain behind bars while he seeks legal advice.

Williams stands accused of attacking the two victims in the early hours of the morning last Thursday as the pair returned home from the Banjo Paterson Inn, a pub on the Kosciuszko Road in Jindabyne.

Police allege Williams knocked the man unconscious before sexually and physically assaulting the woman, ABC News reported.

So severe were the pair’s facial injuries, police initially suspected there was more than one attacker. They say they now believe Williams was the sole perpetrator.

The courtroom at Queanbeyan Local Court was crowded yesterday morning, the ABC reported, but Williams did not appear in person. His defence lawyer Luke Vozella appeared on his behalf.

The ABC said Vozella asked for a two-week adjournment so Williams could seek further advice, and did not apply for bail.

Bail was formally refused.

The matter will return to court later this month.
