Spread the love

On Thursday 5th July, the summer holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg begin and with it a high season at the capital’s airports. Roughly 4.9 million passengers are expected to visit both airports during this period. This is around 7.2% more than last year’s summer period. The peak of this wave of passengers during the summer period is the first holiday weekend. From 5th until 8th July, more than 430,000 passengers are expected at the airports, on around 3,260 flights.

In total, 89 airlines will be connecting Berlin and Brandenburg with 189 destinations in 56 countries this summer. The most popular tourist destinations from Berlin are Palma de Mallorca, Antalya and Barcelona.

Terminal D renovations at Tegel Airport

Right after the intense first holiday weekend (5th-8th July 2018), renovations will be taking place in Tegel’s Terminal D, up to and including 20th August 2018. The security area will be extended to cope with the rising volume of passengers and to reduce waiting times.

The renovations are mainly taking place for passengers of Eurowings who depart from Terminal D. The construction period was intentionally planned during the summer holidays, as security checks during this period are changing. Business travel with a higher volume of hand luggage is sinking, as expected, while the amount of holiday travellers who travel for a longer period of time and check in their luggage is rising.

Punctual arrival

As a result of the high volume of traffic during the summer holidays, passengers of all airlines are asked to plan for enough time for check-in and security. Passengers should be at the airport no less than two hours before their departure time, and should go through security directly after checking in. To avoid unnecessary waiting times, it is advised to check flight status, check-in counter opening times and hand luggage regulations of the respective airlines, either online or via telephone prior to departure. Many airlines offer free online check-in.

Arrival by car

Berlin Schönefeld

Travellers who are arriving via the A113 to Schönefeld Airport, should allow for sufficient time. Repairs to the motorway to Schönefeld between Johannisthaler Chaussee und Späthstraße junctions are expected to take place until 17th August 2018, in both directions. During this period, only two lanes in each direction will be available.
Repairs to the B96a between Schönefeld and Adlergestell will take place until 2020. Both directions will be single-lane on the carriageway into the city.
Berlin Tegel

Due to renovation roadwork on the Rudolf Wissell Bridge in the southern direction, from 8th until 24th August 2018, the A100 will be reduced to two lanes in each direction. There will also be a ban on trucks over 3.5 tonnes from the Beusselstraße junction onwards. In light of this, an increased volume of traffic is likely at the intersection of Saatwinkler Damm and the access road to TXL airport.

Parking

In total, there are around 4,000 parking spaces for passengers at Berlin Schönefeld, and 2,200 at Berlin Tegel. It is recommended to allow for plenty of time to park at the airport.

Parking spaces at Berlin Schönefeld can be booked in advance.
