Spread the love

The first day of a luxury cruise is always a momentous occasion, especially if the ship is special.  And so it is aboard Sea Cloud II, one of three vessels of Sea Cloud Cruises that retains the graceful elegance of a bygone era.  More a large yacht than a small ship, Sea Cloud II is the sister ship of the original Sea Cloud, which indeed was the private yacht of American heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post.  At the time of its construction in 1932, Sea Cloud was the largest yacht in the world.  Though there are far larger private vessels on the high seas today, a sense of opulence remains aboard Sea Cloud II, where spacious suites have windows and fireplaces like Park Avenue apartments.  Yes, fireplaces on a ship—electric, of course—certainly add a homelike feel to a maritime stateroom.  The marble bathrooms with bathtubs also enhance the feeling of grandeur.

Croatia has become one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, and it is easy to understand why.  With a long coastline and many islands, Croatia’s beauty abounds in dramatic landscapes and colourful seas, more generally associated with tropical destinations far from Europe.  Instead, Sea Cloud passengers on Adriatic Sea itineraries are taken to such places as the scenic island of Korčula, one of the many gems close to Dubrovnik, one of Sea Cloud’s ports of embarkation and disembarkation.  The good thing about small ships is the ability to visit small destinations where thousands of other cruisers are not roaming the streets.  Sea Cloud II’s capacity is fewer than 100 passengers, enhancing the yacht’s feel on board with easy on/off procedures and visits to ports where authentic experiences await the sophisticated traveller.

Korčula is one of several Croatian islands that have risen to the top of the list of must-see places for travellers from other parts of Europe and beyond.  Given the beautiful, clear water surrounding Croatia’s islands, it’s no wonder they are now counted among Europe’s most popular travel destinations.  Add in picturesque cities and towns brimming with history, friendly locals, delicious food and wine, and a pleasant summer climate, and the result is a most rewarding travel experience.

Reaching Dubrovnik and other cities in Croatia is easy when flying Croatia Airlines. The culture of Croatia’s friendly hospitality is found on board as a precursor to the warm welcome awaiting passengers upon their arrival in one of Europe’s most beautifully preserved cities. Although it is hard to leave the appeal of Dubrovnik behind, knowing what lies ahead aboard Sea Cloud II and the ports visited helps make the departure a lot easier.
